how to become a contact tracer

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you'll be able to:

  • Describe the tasks required for manual contract tracing.
  • List the main parts of an employee's person account.

Meet the Team

Ursa Major Solar is a solar energy company based in the southwest of the United States that sells, installs, and maintains solar energy products. It has employees in several states, including California and Arizona. In addition to its onsite employees, its mobile employees travel to customers' homes and offices to install and maintain solar equipment.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ursa Major has put new policies and procedures in place to keep its employees and customers safe. One change is that it's using Work.com to make sure that everyone stays safe as Ursa Major reopens for business.

As part of Work.com, Ursa Major sent a back-to-work wellness survey to its employees in Phoenix, Arizona, because it's prioritizing opening that office. The survey asked employees if they've come in contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19 and if they have any COVID-19 symptoms. If they do, Work.com creates a task for a manual contact tracer to follow up.

Ursa Major's hardworking contact tracer is Sally Chang, a member of the solar energy company's human resources department. She's trained as a manual contact tracer and is also well versed in Ursa Major's privacy policies. She's dedicated to decreasing the spread of COVID-19 at Ursa Major. She works from home where she shares an office with her dog, Sunny.

An important tool in Sally's toolbox is Work.com's Contact Tracing for Employees solution. It helps her speed through these daily tasks.

  • Using guided assessments to record wellness information
  • Manually tracing employee interactions to identify possible points of transmission across meetings, employees, and offices
  • Initiating actions like enrollment in a care program with employees' consent, follow-up actions, and daily monitoring
  • Identifying and addressing possible barriers to worker health and productivity
  • Creating email templates to make it easier to send sick employees information about the support services and health resources provided by Ursa Major

See how a manual contact tracer uses Contact Tracing for Employees in this video.

To access Contact Tracing for Employees, you must have it installed and set up in your org. In this module, we assume you are a Health Cloud admin or business user with the proper permissions to perform manual contact tracing in your org. If you're not, that's OK. Read along to learn how you would take the steps in a production org. Don't try to follow these steps in your Trailhead Playground. Contact Tracing for Employees isn't available in the Trailhead Playground.

View a Person Account Record

Ready to face the day, Sally sits down at her computer with Sunny at her feet. She logs in to her account and views her tasks. For her first task of the day, she clicks an employee's name–Romy Kenny. Romy's person account opens.

Romy Kenny's person account with five sections highlighted.

Sally checks out the following sections of Romy's account page.

  • Timeline and Contact Tracing Graph tabs (1) Click Timelineto view a longitudinal history of Ursa Major's interactions with Romy. The timeline includes an overview of past and scheduled events. Click Contact Tracing Graph to view all the people associated with Romy and their current contact tracing status. At a glance, you see: who tested positive, who's symptomatic, and who hasn't yet been contacted or categorized.
  • Navigation (2)—Jump to the pages you want without leaving this console.
  • Chatter (3)—Use Chatter posts to collaborate and discuss events in the authorized personnel Chatter group during Romy's contact tracing process.
  • Life Events (4)—At the top, view Romy's current phase in the contact tracing process. He's currently enrolled, but not yet quarantined. Sally scrolls down to see more information in the Details and Related subtabs.
  • Activities (5)—Lists activities that Sally must keep in mind, such as an employee contact tracing task or a contact tracing follow-up task.

Sally uses the contact information displayed in Romy's person account record to call him, but doesn't get a response. She'll check back later.

Sally is properly trained, happy with her tools, and ready to contact the next employee on her task list to start manual contact tracing.
